Jefferson Parish Schools is partnering with The Jeremiah Group to celebrate Voter Registration Week in high schools across the district February 25 to March 1.
“We want our students to graduate high school with the skills and knowledge to make our world a better place,” said JP Schools Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley. “We’re excited to partner with The Jeremiah Group to help these young people learn how they can become engaged citizens.”
West Jefferson High hosted a kickoff event and registration drive February 25. So far, voter registration drives are planned for East Jefferson High (2/26), Higgins High (2/26), Patrick F. Taylor Academy (2/27), Grace King High (2/27), Bonnabel Magnet Academy High (2/28) Thomas Jefferson High (2/28), Helen Cox High (3/1) and John Ehret High (3/1).
Becoming an engaged citizen and registering to vote when eligible are outlined in the Graduate Profile of the district’s new strategic plan, 2024: The Future Our Kids Deserve. The Graduate Profile, which was created with the help of the Superintendent’s Student Leadership Council, outlines what success looks like for students who graduate from Jefferson Parish Schools.
The Jefferson Parish School Board unanimously approved Voter Registration Week during its February 12 meeting. JP Schools last held Voter Registration Week in 2018 from April 30 to May 4. Voter Registration Week is part of The Jeremiah Group’s youth initiative of civic engagement.
“For over 25 years, The Jeremiah Group has been working to make democracy a reality for all people, including young people,” said The Jeremiah Group Executive Director and Lead Organizer Jackie Jones. “Voter Registration Week is an opportunity to teach these students how they can make their voices heard and make a difference in our parish, state, and nation.”
The Jeremiah Group is a community organization that does nonpartisan organizing. Jeremiah’s work focuses on economic opportunity and education in Jefferson and Orleans parishes.
