Bissonet Plaza Elementary teacher Tracey Zelden and Terrytown Elementary teacher Mary Goewey were recognized by the American Petroleum Institute recently.
Zelden received the API’s Chairman’s Award and Goewey received the Distinguished Teacher Award. The annual API program recognizes two award categories: Distinguished Teacher Award ($250) and Chairman’s Award ($500) to honor science teachers that show a commitment to teaching, resourcefulness, professional involvement, and community service. The teachers were recognized on March 20 at the API Award Luncheon.
Teachers, who are nominated by district and school leadership teams, complete and submit an application packet. A committee of API Delta Chapter members review, score and rank the application packets using selection criteria.
The API Teacher Award Program was established by the Delta Chapter of the American Petroleum Institute in 1987 to pay tribute to and reinforce outstanding science teaching in the New Orleans area and surrounding parishes. Since the institution of the awards program, API has awarded over $200,000 to deserving classroom teachers.
